Aphasia Resources and Support Groups

Our goal is not only to support your aphasia rehabilitation in our hospital and outpatient centers, but to also provide resources that will support living with aphasia outside our doors. Below is a list of aphasia-related resources that you may find helpful.

  • The Aphasia Caregiver Guide – A comprehensive guide to caregiving and aphasia developed by the National Aphasia Association; includes tips for getting organized, advocacy, financial management, getting support, navigating relationships, and self-care
  • The Aphasia Institute – A 15-minute video providing information for people who have a family member or friend with aphasia, including basic communication tips
  • ARC Friends and Family Info Sessions – Virtual informational sessions for friends and family members of people with aphasia to learn more about aphasia and aphasia resources and ask questions
  • Voices of Hope for Aphasia – Online simulations that provide activities that can help you understand what it is like to have aphasia
  • TBIConnect – A free, virtual communication training program for people with traumatic brain injury, their families, friends, and caregivers

Aphasia Research

Support Groups & Online Communities

  • Sheltering Arms Institute Aphasia Support Group (Richmond) – A monthly in-person support group (2nd Wednesday of each month from 2-3 p.m.) for people living with aphasia and their family or friends located at the Sheltering Arms Institute inpatient hospital campus
  • UVA Aphasia Support Group (Charlottesville) – A weekly in-person support group (Wednesdays from 2-3 p.m.) for adults with aphasia and their loved ones located at the University of Virginia Sheila C. Johnson Center. Contact: cmb4tm@virginia.edu
  • Aphasia Support Groups in Other Areas – A listing of support groups across the county compiled by the National Aphasia Association
  • Aphasia Connect – Online conversation groups for people with aphasia and/or their care partners to connect with others who understand their journey, provide support, and share strategies
  • Aphasia Recovery Connection – Online Facebook community of people with aphasia from around the world for socialization, learning, sharing, and connections
  • Beyond High-C – Offers live personalized online conversation practice for people with stoke, aphasia, brain injury, or Parkinson’s disease.
  • Virtual Connections for Aphasia – Online community with daily facilitated groups

Aphasia Apps

There are several mobile or online applications developed specifically for people with aphasia. The apps listed below are some suggestions but are not an exhaustive list. Remember to consult with your speech-language pathologist to decide which apps may best support your recovery.

  • AphasiaGPT – A personalized AI support platform for people with aphasia and their caregivers to practice real-world scenarios through conversations and exercises
  • Aphasia Software Finder – An aphasia-friendly online resource to find software and apps that can help improve communication
  • Aphasia Therapy Online – A free speech therapy website
  • Constant Therapy – Provides targeted exercises for practice with verbal expression, auditory comprehension, reading comprehension, and written expression
  • iNameit – Targets functional word-finding for objects related to activities of daily living
  • SmallTalk Free Apps for Aphasia – A suite of free apps offering daily exercises or people with aphasia
