Accepted Insurance & Billing Information

Most insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid; however, the following list of providers is subject to change. To confirm coverage and ensure Sheltering Arms Institute is in your network, we recommend contacting your insurance carrier directly by calling the phone number or visiting the website listed on your insurance card. If we can offer assistance in assessing your coverage, please contact our billing department at (804) 272-3171.

For inpatient physical rehabilitation services: Medicare does not require pre-approval; however, some Medicare replacement plans and commercial insurances require pre-approval to ensure that your stay is covered. What Bills You May Expect Following Inpatient Rehab

At Sheltering Arms Institute, we take every aspect of your recovery seriously and believe that understanding what to expect regarding billing is important so you can be prepared and focus on your recovery.

Sheltering Arms Institute works with most health insurance companies and your financial responsibility will depend on your individual health insurance plan benefits. Before any admission to our inpatient rehabilitation hospital, we work with each person’s health insurance carrier to obtain their necessary benefit information and authorizations to cover a hospital stay with us. While we try our best to ensure our patients’ financial responsibility will be kept to a minimum, your health insurance plan ultimately determines your out-of-pocket liability.

What Providers are Involved in Your Care & How Does This Impact Your Bills?

At Sheltering Arms Institute, you will receive care from a skilled team of clinicians across multiple disciplines, including nurses, doctors, therapists, psychologists, and others. All clinicians are employed directly by Sheltering Arms Institute except for our doctors and psychologists who are employees of VCU Health. Sheltering Arms Institute contracts the specialized services of these doctors and psychologists to best serve our patients. Additionally, sometimes your doctor may require external specialist consultations; those specialists are also not employed by Sheltering Arms Institute.

How Many Bills Can I Expect to Receive for my Inpatient Rehab Stay?

Patients can expect to receive at least two bills for their inpatient rehabilitation stay at Sheltering Arms Institute. Here’s why:

  • Sheltering Arms Institute’s billing department will submit claims to your insurance company for all facility/hospital and psychology charges.
  • VCU Health’s billing department will submit claims to your insurance company for all physician charges.

As your insurance company processes the claims submitted by each provider, you will receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your health insurance plan for each claim submitted. The EOB should summarize what your insurance paid and how much you may still owe.

Shortly after you receive the EOB, you will receive a statement from each provider showing the patient responsibility amount as dictated by your health plan. If at any time you have questions about your responsibility, you may contact your health insurance plan’s customer service department—their phone number and website are listed on your insurance card—or Sheltering Arms Institute’s or VCU Health’s billing departments at the phone numbers listed below.
