Understanding arm and hand therapy
Arm and hand therapy, or upper extremity recovery, at Sheltering Arms Institute helps individuals strengthen muscles and increase joint range of motion—from shoulder to fingertip—through the use of advanced technology and individualized care plans.
Arm and hand therapy is applied to a broad range of injuries, conditions, and illnesses, including spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, various neurological conditions, and more.
Each application of arm and hand therapy is determined on an individual basis, accounting for nature and degree of injury, condition, or illness; abilities; and goals. On average, individuals participate in arm and hand therapy for three weeks during inpatient rehabilitation.
Arm and hand specialty services are provided in addition to the standard three hours of daily therapy, totaling 15 hours per week. Patients typically receive one hour of standard occupational therapy per day, which may focus on the arm and/or hand, while also receiving one extra hour two to three times a week with our upper extremity recovery specialist.
