BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION FAQs

Understanding balance and fall prevention therapy

Common signs and symptoms of imbalance include loss of or observed unsteadiness, a feeling of falling, floating sensations, poor spatial awareness, and reduced sensory input.

At Sheltering Arms Institute, a majority of patients receive balance and fall prevention therapy as it is a key part of rehabilitation and recovery, no matter the trauma or condition. Most often, patients suffering from stroke, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, osteoarthritis, and central nervous system disorders receive balance and fall prevention therapy.

All Sheltering Arms Institute locations offer therapy for balance and fall prevention; however, our Hull Street and Chester locations specialize in orthopedic conditions only while all of our other locations specialize in both neurological and orthopedic conditions.

As defined by the Vestibular Disorders Association, vestibular physical therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation intended to alleviate problems caused by vestibular disorders, primarily vertigo and dizziness, gaze instability, and/or imbalance and falls. A customized exercise plan is developed based on the findings from a clinical assessment, laboratory testing, and imaging studies as well as patient input.

Balance and fall prevention therapy can be applied to a much wider range of traumas or conditions.
