Understanding cardiac-focused care
Sudden cardiac arrest is a condition when the heart abruptly stops working, usually due to a faulty electrical system in the heart. When the heart stops beating, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs, which quickly results in loss of consciousness and loss of breathing.
Unlike sudden cardiac arrest, a heart attack occurs when the blood vessels of the heart become blocked. These blockages can cause part of the heart muscle to die and become dysfunctional, leading to decreased overall heart function.
Signs of a sudden cardiac event include sudden collapse, loss of breathing, loss of pulse, and loss of consciousness. Symptoms that may occur before a cardiac event, and are similar to that of a heart attack, include chest pain or discomfort, irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting.
At Sheltering Arms Institute, inpatient cardiac services are individually designed. Cardiac-focused care encompasses a wide variety of conditions. Clinicians develop personalized care plans focused on improving cardiovascular health and endurance while also educating patients and families on how to manage and mitigate cardiac conditions through heart-healthy lifestyle changes related to diet and exercise.
All individuals receiving inpatient care have their own room and access to a wide variety of therapies, social support, and rehab technologies.
