Understanding developmental disabilities therapy
Clinicians at Sheltering Arms Institute work with individuals living with a range of developmental disabilities, including, but not limited to, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and mitochondrial disease, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and spina bifida.
While many developmental disabilities have no cure, physical, occupational, speech-language, and recreational therapies can help individuals manage their condition.
Typically, an episode of therapy lasts between 4 and 12 weeks. Afterwards, check-in sessions usually occur a few times per year, which allows your therapist to use episodic care to help monitor functional changes and manage injuries or new concerns as needed.
There are many technologies available at Sheltering Arms Institute for individuals with diverse abilities. Your therapist will first perform an evaluation to determine what technology may help your specific needs and check that each device is safe for you to use. Technologies often used include electrical stimulation, vibration plate or wand, bodyweight support systems, safety systems or harnesses, robotics, and balance equipment such as computers or force plates to add balance challenges.
