Aquatic Therapy

Recover from injury & reduce your pain with hydrotherapy exercise

Aquatic therapy, also known as hydrotherapy, is a type of physical therapy performed in the water. The properties of water – buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, resistance, and temperature (warm for therapeutic effects) – make aquatic therapy particularly beneficial for:

  • Improving strength & flexibility
  • Increasing endurance & agility
  • Promoting healthy weight loss
  • Enhancing your balance, gait & coordination
  • Increasing range of motion
  • Boosting cardio intensity
  • Strengthening muscles & connective tissues

Water also supports some of your body weight, making workouts easier on joints and reducing the chances for injury, ultimately helping reduce your pain and allowing you to recover from your injury quicker.

Therapy Pool Technology

As with most rehabilitation services, aquatic therapy continues to advance with new technology. In addition to our large, warm-water therapeutic pool at the Sheltering Arms Institute Bon Air location, our Reynolds Center features a new HydroWorx® 750 therapy pool.

This high-tech pool includes an underwater treadmill, resistance jet technology, a deep well area, and multi-angle video capabilities to support gait analysis. These tools allow the therapist a variety of options when implementing a plan of care and support advanced recovery.

Setting Personal Goals for a Healthy Recovery

During the initial evaluation and assessment process, personal goals will be established by each patient and their therapist. A customized aquatic therapy program will then be created to meet your individual needs. In addition to personal goals, our sessions will focus on two overall goals:

  • Transition to land-based therapy if appropriate
  • Become independent enough to continue your aquatic program on your own
