Ekso Indego

What is the Ekso Indego?

The Ekso Indego is a lower-extremity robotic exoskeleton that is worn over a user’s clothing and attaches to their legs and trunk before transferring its load to the ground, so the user does not have to bear the weight of the 29-pound device. It is designed to be highly individualized for each user and has battery-powered motors that drive the legs to create a walking pattern among those who are unable to stand or walk on their own due to a spinal cord injury or other neurological injury.

How does the Ekso Indego work?

The Indego utilizes comprehensive software that allows appropriate customization to suit the proper gait pattern of each user. Additionally, settings such as step speed and level of difficulty can be adjusted. With its slim profile and modular quick-connect design, the Indego is the only exoskeleton that can easily be put on or removed without assistance. It is compatible with stability aids such as rolling walkers and forearm crutches, offering users greater flexibility and independence.

Unlike the EksoNR exoskeleton, the Indego is designed without a backpack or exposed wiring, making it safe for use in most home and community settings, including surfaces like pavement, grass, carpet, and tile. It supports more natural ambulation while promoting improved blood circulation, gastrointestinal function, and the maintenance of bone density.

What diagnoses is the Indego Exoskeleton appropriate for?

The Indego is suitable for individuals who have experienced a stroke or a C7 to L5 spinal cord injury. Individuals who have experienced a spinal cord injury between the T3 to L5 vertebrae can use the Indego at home or in the community in addition to using the device during in-clinic therapy appointments.

Ideally, the user will have sufficient upper-body strength to utilize assistive devices like forearm crutches or a walker in order to supplement the unit with balance and trunk control.
