Hocoma Armeo Spring

What is the Hocoma Armeo Spring?

The Armeo Spring is an exoskeleton device for arm and hand rehabilitation that is spring-loaded to provide support during interactive computer games.

How does the Armeo Spring work?

The Armeo Spring is equipped with upper and lower arm springs that can be adjusted to provide the right amount of support for the arm(s) in order to move it more freely, even if the individual’s arm is weak. There are multiple points of adjustment for a personalized and comfortable fit.

The Armeo Spring is unique in that it provides high repetition and neuromuscular training with a gamified component. The device has a variety of games that challenge functional movements where the intensity and repetition of the tasks optimize motor recovery over time. A therapist can choose tasks focused on different movements of the arm, including lifting, bending, extending, and gripping. The device will also remember an individual’s settings and create a game space within or slightly outside of the person’s active range of motion to provide the right amount of challenge.

How is the Armeo Spring different from the Armeo Power?

The Armeo Spring is different from the Armeo Power in that it does not have a robotic component. It works best with individuals who have at least some movement in their arms as the device is self-initiated. The Armeo Power is a robot-assisted device that is more appropriate for patients who are very early in their recovery and have little to no movement in their arms.

What candidate is ideal to use the Armeo Spring and what diagnoses does this device help with?

The ideal candidate for the Armeo Spring has some weakness in at least one of their arms, whether it be from a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, or a neurological disorder. The device is especially appropriate for people who enjoy a gamified approach to therapy.
