*Please note: While Sheltering Arms Institute’s off-road driving simulator can help assess many skills important for driving, our driving evaluations do not include an on-road component. Therefore, our simulator does not meet criteria outlined by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to be considered a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS). If your doctor or the DMV recommends a CDRS evaluation, please be aware that our driving evaluations will not qualify.

Yes, however, throughout the duration of your care, we may need a prescription from your doctor based on your therapist’s assessment and/or for insurance authorization purposes.

Hours of operation vary by location. Currently, therapy at our Hanover location is offered Monday through Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On average, each therapy session lasts 45 minutes to one hour.

Please wear closed-toed shoes with a back and rubber sole, such as athletic shoes, and comfortable clothing that does not restrict your range of motion.

Yes, the team at our Hanover outpatient center offers physical rehab for both neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Inpatient rehabilitation has relocated to our brand-new, state-of-the-art physical rehab hospital, which is located just past Short Pump. The hospital’s physical address is 2000 Wilkes Ridge Drive, Richmond, VA 23233.

Sheltering Arms Institute does not offer transportation services; however, we have a Transportation Resource Guide that lists many other transportation services available in the Richmond area.

Sheltering Arms Institute accepts patients aged 13 and older.

Most insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid. One of our insurance specialists works with each patient and their family/caregiver to confirm specific insurance coverage. We have therapy pools at our Bon Air and Reynolds outpatient centers.

Yes, however, only at select locations. We also offer free translator services at all of our locations.

A family member/caregiver may be asked to participate in therapy. However, we encourage you to speak with your provider to determine which family/caregiver(s) may be participating based on your care plan. If a family member/caregiver will not be participating in your therapy, they may drop off and pick up their loved one from appointments, wait in their vehicle, or wait in the lobby, which helps provide ample space in the gym for other patients.
