Teddy Matthews
In 2022, Teddy experienced sepsis following an appendectomy, which led to a quadruple amputation in order to save his life. Due to additional medical complications, Teddy spent six months in acute and long-term care facilities before coming to Sheltering Arms Institute in June 2023 for his first round of inpatient physical rehabilitation. In February 2024, through our Jump Start Program for intensive prosthetic training, Teddy returned for a second inpatient stay with us to learn how to use and navigate his prostheses.
Teddy reflects on his rehabilitation journey with an appreciation for his care team’s unwavering support. “I had the right therapists, and I really needed them to push me some days because it was tough going from an able-bodied person to losing all of my limbs.”
Today, Teddy continues to progress in our outpatient therapy program, mastering activities of daily living with his myoelectric upper-extremity prostheses and working on returning to driving. His advice to others: persevere through the toughest moments. “Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Just keep fighting and keep pushing.”
Codey Wells
In October 2023, just three days after his 22nd birthday, Codey experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a fall down the stairs. He underwent both a craniotomy and craniectomy and was in a coma for nearly 10 weeks. After months in acute care, Codey began his physical rehab journey while in a minimally conscious state. For three months, Codey’s multidisciplinary inpatient care team at Sheltering Arms Institute worked to help him regain strength and awareness following months of immobility. As a former musician, music therapy was a key factor in Codey’s recovery, helping to increase his engagement and awareness and providing valuable insights into his cognitive function as he was unable to speak.
Codey went on to participate in our outpatient therapy program, ultimately achieving incredible outcomes including regaining the ability to walk, speak, and return to activities of daily living and leisure. His words to others going through their own journey: “Never give up on yourself. Work hard and listen to your therapists and never lose faith.”
Support the Power to Overcome Fund by considering a sponsorship! All proceeds help patients and caregivers in need with resources to enhance their quality of life as they leave Sheltering Arms Institute. Funds help cover things such as out-of-pocket costs for power wheelchair batteries, “sip and puff” or other assistive technology, medication, and other items that increase independence for individuals who could not otherwise afford them.
Multiple sponsorship levels are available for corporations and individuals. To learn more about sponsorship opportunities, click the button below or contact Lisa Resch at lresch@shelteringarms.com or (804) 342-4141.
