Makinna Moen

MD – SCI/Complex Care Unit

Dr. Makinna Moen is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician on the Dallas Disbro Ability Center spinal cord injury and complex care unit at Sheltering Arms Institute. She specializes in the rehabilitation and longitudinal care of individuals with spinal cord injuries and complex medical needs.

A Midwest native, Dr. Moen holds a B.A. in Physiology, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota. She completed a two-year postbaccalaureate research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She earned her M.D. from the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Moen completed residency in PM&R at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she also served as Chief Resident. She went on to pursue a fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine through VCU, Sheltering Arms Institute, and the Central Virginia VA Health Care System.

Dr. Moen is committed to education and mentorship, serving as an Associate Director of the VCU PM&R Residency Program and faculty mentor for the medical student PM&R Student Interest Group. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Moen is actively involved in quality improvement initiatives focused on reducing hospital readmissions from inpatient rehabilitation and improving workflows through electronic health record innovation. Outside of medicine, Dr. Moen enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, and volunteering through her church and various community organizations in the Richmond area.
