Sheltering Arms Celebrates 125 Years of Caring

In 1889, Rebekah Peterkin was a young woman with a dream.
Moved by the suffering of those around her, she established Sheltering Arms
Hospital to provide healthcare for working families who could not afford it.
Richmonders rallied around Ms. Peterkin and her vision. Over the years, doctors
and nurses, retired persons and school children, farmers and local business
owners, and even former patients volunteered time and resources to make sure
patients got the best care possible. Sheltering Arms was truly a labor of love,
by the community and for the community.

It was on this day in 1889 that the very first patient
received care at Sheltering Arms. As we celebrate our 125th
anniversary, it is astonishing to look back at the countless lives that have
both touched and been touched for the better by Sheltering Arms.

Though physical locations and even
Sheltering Arms’ medical specialty have changed over the years, the
organization’s commitment to Ms. Peterkin’s dream of offering quality,
compassionate care to those who need it most has remained steadfast. We know
that many people have made powerful contributions to Sheltering Arms over the
last century and a quarter. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in our
rich history – as a volunteer, donor, patient, staff member or supporter of
another kind. It is because of you that we celebrate this monumental occasion
and we can look forward to serving our community for years to come.
