Sheltering Arms Fund Supports Veteran Athletes

The Sheltering Arms Fund of the Community Foundation, which serves Richmond and central Virginia, recently provided a $10,000 grant to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Mid-Atlantic Chapter.

The Paralyzed Veterans of America, Mid-Atlantic Chapter offers adaptive sports programs, as well as funding for members to attend adaptive sports events. This recent grant money was used toward expenses of the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the largest adaptive sports competition in the United States, which was held in Tampa, Florida in July. Approximately 50 athletes from the Mid-Atlantic chapter were able to attend the games this year, along with essential medical staff that would not otherwise have been funded due to government cut backs.

The purpose of the Sheltering Arms Fund is to complement and extend Sheltering Arms’ mission by funding health-related initiatives in support of uninsured and underinsured adults who are facing physical or cognitive disabilities, or who are at risk of developing functional limitations.

We are proud of the athletes who participated in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and are honored to have had the opportunity to support them!
