Staying Busy When You’re Bored: Getting Out Into the Community

As we age, staying engaged and finding new hobbies can be challenging, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Boredom, loneliness, and stress often stem from a lack of connection, and getting involved in the community can be a powerful remedy. Whether you want to give back, explore new interests, meet people, or learn something new, there are plenty of fun and meaningful ways to stay active and connected.

Volunteer

There are few things more rewarding than helping others. Consider volunteering at places like your local soup kitchen, a local animal shelter like Richmond SPCA, or a hospital like Sheltering Arms Institute! Organizations like these are always in need of compassionate hands and hearts. Offering your time can offer a fresh perspective and it might just become your new favorite way to spend a weekend.

Create Art

Tap into your artistic side! The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts) offers art classes to the community that are free or low-cost. VisArts offers a variety of classes spanning different art forms such as clay, painting, drawing, photography, glass, and much more. If art is already a passion or a hobby of yours, VisArts has a communal studio that gives you the space to create with access to specialized equipment.

Art also exists in the garden! At Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, you can explore the intersection of art and nature through unique offerings like nature illustration, garden design, floral design, nature photography, mind-body-spirit wellness through plants, and food and drink experiences. Whether you’re sketching a leaf, designing a garden, or learning how plants influence health and flavor, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden offers a creative way to connect with the natural world.

Cooking

Elevate your kitchen game with a class at MISE En Place in Richmond. These hands-on classes cater to everyone. From complete beginners to experienced home cooks, you can explore cuisines from around the world. It’s a great way to bond with friends and family. You can even host a virtual dinner party so friends near and far can learn how to cook together.

Note: Classes are subject to payment.
