Try Before You Buy: Exploring Assistive Technology

By: Elisabeth Drake, Engagement Technology Specialist

Is it getting hard to see those small lines on your measuring cup?

There is a “talking” measuring cup that will let you know the quantity of what you put inside.

Is it becoming dangerous to lean over the couch to close the blinds?

There are smart blinds that you can close from the comfort of your couch via a smartphone.

From a simple magnifying glass to voice-activated smart devices, technology is everywhere, and the right tools can support daily routines, connectivity with family, and safety within the home.

However, with all the options available, how do you know what technology is right for you? And, once you find a device, what type of model and features should you choose?

That’s where Sheltering Arms Institute can help. We have an Assistive Technology Lab that you can visit to try out some of the latest devices before you commit to a purchase.

When you visit the Assistive Technology Lab at Sheltering Arms Institute, we will complete an intake form to determine which areas of the home we should focus on and what devices may be a good fit for you. Information we will discuss together may include:

  • What does your average day entail?
  • In which areas of your home do you spend a lot of time?
  • Are there any daily activities that are challenging for you?
  • Have you tried any devices previously?
  • What resources do you already have in your home? (i.e., Wi-Fi, chargers, device brands, or even a friend or family member that can help if you run into any issues)

We’ll have a conversation regarding areas of need, compatibility, and your comfort level with technology to ensure the products we help you choose will be the right fit for your lifestyle, needs, and abilities.

These services will enable you to be independent and ensure peace of mind for yourself and those you love as assistive technology can provide a way for you to reach your family or a friend if needed, offering both you and your loved ones a sense of security.

When it comes to maintaining independence and improving quality of life, assistive technology can make a big difference. Sometimes it’s simply being aware of what products are out there and having some help to figure out what will be the best fit for you.

Managing Phantom Limb Pain

Losing a limb is a life-changing experience—physically, emotionally, and mentally. One of the more unexpected and often misunderstood aspects of limb loss is phantom limb pain (PLP). Despite the limb no longer being there, individuals may continue to feel sensations—sometimes painful—where the limb used to be. But why does this happen, and what can be done about it? Let’s break it down.

Spring Into Action with the Proper Garden Tools and Accessories

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to tend those gardens! Just be careful not to overextend your body into positions that have been dormant all winter. Gardening can require you to bend, lift, and twist in ways that can injure your back, knees, or other parts of your body. While garden tools can make your digging and planting easier, sometimes the use of tools encourages poor positioning or increases the chance of injury.

5 Exercises For Concussions

A concussion is defined as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) induced by direct or indirect force transmitted to the head. Looking at the statistics, there were 27.16 million new TBI cases globally in 2019. Nationally, there were approximately 214,110 TBI-related hospitalizations in 2020 and 69,473 TBI-related deaths in 2021.² Approximately 80% of all TBIs are classified as mild head injuries (CDC). These numbers highlight the significant public health impact concussions have worldwide, and the importance of proper evaluation and management.

What to Wear to Physical Therapy

When heading to physical therapy, comfort and functionality are key. Your attire can significantly impact the effectiveness of your session, affecting your ability to move freely, follow your therapist’s instructions, and perform exercises with ease. The right clothing not only promotes flexibility but also allows your therapist to evaluate your movements and address areas that need attention. Here’s what to wear – and what to avoid – for a successful visit!
