WHY SHELTERING ARMS INSTITUTE?

Innovative approaches, comprehensive care

Sheltering Arms Institute clinicians are dedicated to helping people living with back pain address the underlying cause to reduce symptoms and return to activities they love.

Advanced technology

Sheltering Arms Institute has a wide range of advanced technology available to patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis, including the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill and the C-Mill bodyweight support and virtual reality treadmill to unload weight and decrease pressure through the spine.

Dry needling

Used on its own or in conjunction with physical therapy, dry needling releases trigger points and increases blood flow, alleviating back pain and accelerating healing.

Spinal manipulations

Often used for conditions such as low back pain and sciatica, spinal manipulation is a technique sometimes performed by therapists to employ a precise force to one of the joints of the spine.

Aquatic therapy

Sheltering Arms Institute also offers aquatic therapy in our heated pools at the Bon Air and Reynolds outpatient centers in conjunction with land-based therapy.

Back Injury Therapy FAQs

Understanding back injury therapy

Not necessarily. Oftentimes, back pain can be solved or drastically improved by physical therapy; however, sometimes surgery is necessary. During your evaluation, your therapist will determine if you are a good candidate for physical therapy or if further diagnostic testing is needed.

The length of outpatient therapy varies from person to person; however, therapy for back pain usually lasts 4-8 weeks. Your therapist will work with you to develop a customized and effective treatment plan to help you achieve your best recovery.

Most of the time, addressing the underlying issue(s) such as weakness, tightness, or postural corrections can immensely help reduce symptoms and pain; however, depending on what is causing the back pain (e.g., scoliosis, degenerative arthritis, genetics), physical therapy can alleviate the pain, but may not be able to resolve it completely.

Typically, someone experiencing back pain will benefit from outpatient therapy services. Patients with complex back pain/conditions may be eligible for inpatient rehab if they have more than one disease or condition present at the same time that requires 24/7 care and physician oversight.
