Your own space

Spacious, all-private rooms featuring Stryker beds, en-suite bathrooms, grab bars, lifts, lay-flat furniture for guests, and large picture windows with views of nature give patients the confidence and foundation they need to recover.

Physical therapy

Utilizing modern rehabilitation facilities and equipment, physical therapists at Sheltering Arms Institute develop individualized exercise regimens to strengthen the muscles around the new joint and regain range of motion.

Occupational therapy

Sheltering Arms Institute occupational therapists work with joint replacement recipients to safely remaster the motions necessary to live independently such as cooking and bathing.

Education and engagement

At Sheltering Arms Institute, our transdisciplinary team of clinicians help patients understand how their new joint and its related rehab will impact their life in the near-term and in the foreseeable future.

I would recommend Sheltering Arms Institute because they were the first ones to help me see that I could do something again. I didn’t know if I could stand up, much less walk. They give you hope where you may not have had it.

Joint Replacement Rehab FAQs

Understanding joint replacement rehabilitation

The most common joint replacements Sheltering Arms Institute provides physical rehabilitation for include shoulder, hip, and knee replacements.

Inpatient rehabilitation provides 24/7 care and three hours of therapy per day for the management of multiple medical conditions whereas outpatient therapy typically takes place 2-3 times per week for approximately one hour per session.

Typically, someone with a joint replacement will benefit from outpatient therapy services after surgery based on their doctor’s recommendations. A patient who has undergone a joint replacement may be eligible for inpatient rehab if they have multiple medical conditions that will affect their recovery in addition to the joint replacement.

The average length of stay for inpatient rehab ranges between 7 and 21 days depending on each individual’s needs.

The length of outpatient therapy is based on the joint that has been replaced and each person’s individual needs. Your therapist will work with you to develop a customized and effective treatment plan to help you achieve your best recovery. On average, therapy for a hip or knee replacement lasts approximately 4-6 weeks and therapy for a shoulder replacement lasts between 8-12 weeks.

Our Prehabilitation Program is designed for individuals who are planning for or considering a total knee replacement. This program helps you prepare your body before surgery so you can recover more quickly and confidently afterward.

Investing time in pre-operative physical therapy can make a meaningful difference in your post-surgical outcomes. Research shows that patients who participate in knee prehabilitation often experience:

  • Reduced post-surgery pain
  • Enhanced muscle strength and joint mobility
  • Improved balance and walking safety
  • A faster return to daily activities

Every journey is unique. Your program begins with a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed physical therapist who will assess your current knee range of motion, quadriceps strength, balance, and walking alignment.

From there, we build a personalized care plan tailored to your goals, which includes:

  • Supervised In-Clinic Exercise: Targeted movements to boost strength and mobility.
  • Custom Home Exercise Program (HEP): Convenient access to our mobile app, complete with guided video tutorials and progress tracking tools.
  • Hands-On Manual Therapy: Expert techniques to improve joint and soft tissue flexibility.
  • Functional & Balance Training: Practical exercises to maximize your safety and confidence at home.

Our ultimate goal is to help you go into surgery stronger, better prepared, and fully equipped to reclaim the activities you love.
