Utilizing the buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, resistance, and temperature of water to reduce pain, improve mobility, and accelerate recovery.
Individualized programs focused on recovery
Aquatic therapy at Sheltering Arms Institute delivers physical therapy through water-based exercises designed to support rehabilitation and recovery from a broad range of conditions and injuries.
Individualized, comfortable, accessible
Offered in the outpatient setting at our Bon Air and Reynolds centers, aquatic therapy supports individuals recovering from a wide array of injuries and conditions and allows ease of movement in a bodyweight-supported environment.
My tenure as a patient in Sheltering Arms Institute’s aquatic therapy program has been a 100% positive experience for me. I actually look forward to each session, with continued zeal and excitement.
Aquatic therapy at work
The buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, resistance, and temperature of water facilitate a number of rehabilitative benefits that can contribute to overall recovery and well-being.
Modern aquatic therapy technology
Sheltering Arms Institute is on the frontlines of therapeutic innovation. In addition to our Bon Air center’s 50-foot, multi-lane, warm-water therapy pool, our Reynolds center features a HydroWorx® 750 therapy pool. This high-tech pool includes an underwater treadmill, resistance jet technology, a 7 ft. deep well area, and multi-angle video capabilities to support gait analysis and offer visual feedback technology for enhanced performance.
At Sheltering Arms Institute, we strive to provide our patients with the best possible care to fit their needs. Having a therapeutic pool expands our available treatment options and allows patients with a variety of diagnoses to be able to tolerate exercises in a warm and buoyant environment prior to land-based therapy. We are passionate about helping patients reach their goals, improve functional mobility, and overall lead a better quality of life.
Understanding aquatic therapy
Aquatic therapy is a type of physical therapy that utilizes the properties of water, specifically buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, resistance, and temperature to augment and accelerate rehabilitation.
Aquatic therapy supports individuals recovering from a wide array of injuries and conditions such as osteoarthritis, balance and vestibular disorders, chronic back, knee and/or ankle pain, muscle and connective tissue tears, sprains and strains, neurological disorders, obesity-related diagnoses, orthopedic injuries, rheumatoid arthritis, joint replacement, and scoliosis.
Aquatic therapy can improve strength and flexibility, increase endurance and agility, enhance balance, gait and coordination, increase range of motion, improve cardiovascular endurance, and strengthen muscles and connective tissues.
Aquatic therapy is offered at our Bon Air and Reynolds outpatient center facilities. The Bon Air center offers a handicap-accessible ramp to allow for safe entering and exiting of the pool area.
