Anyone who you suspect may be “abnormal” at baseline.
Research has shown that baseline testing is not necessary for successful treatment of concussion-related injuries. It has been determined that, with a variety of measures, comparing to “normal” is just as effective as having someone’s baseline information. Often, baseline testing can be inaccurate or not comprehensive enough to evaluate all areas that can be impacted post-concussion. During concussion rehab, the clinician will utilize other assessments and clinical findings post-injury to determine the best course of treatment and recovery.
In summary, if your child or family member has suspicion of being outside of typical norms for performance on oculomotor, vestibular/balance, or cognitive-based assessments that is not reflected in school performance, then baseline testing may be appropriate. This would include someone with a history of developmental or coordination diagnoses or who has participated in contact sports.
