Caring for the Caregiver

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor the dedication, compassion, and resilience of caregivers. Whether caring for a loved one recovering from trauma, illness, or injury, caregivers play an essential role in the healing process. However, caregiving can be overwhelming and emotionally demanding. It’s important to take care of yourself before you can fully care for others. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help caregivers find balance, support, and strength along the way.

Trauma Survivors Network

The Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) provides a supportive community for trauma survivors and their loved ones. It offers tools, education, and opportunities for connection to help families rebuild their lives after trauma. Through monthly support groups — available both locally and nationally in a virtual format — caregivers and survivors can share experiences and find encouragement. TSN also provides self-management courses designed to help participants navigate the emotional and practical challenges of recovery. In addition, the TSN website includes a wealth of resources and guides for caregivers and survivors alike. Sheltering Arms Institute is proud to be a Trauma Survivors Network site, committed to supporting families on their journey toward recovery.

Virginia Navigator

Another valuable resource is Virginia Navigator, a free, statewide directory that connects Virginians to information for veterans, people with disabilities, caregivers, and more. The platform features a dedicated caregiver section offering guidance and support tailored to the unique needs of family caregivers. Through the “Ask an Expert” feature, caregivers can receive free, confidential advice on caregiving-related questions and concerns. The site also provides unbiased recommendations for the best caregiving tools, apps, devices, and other technology designed to make caregiving more manageable and less stressful.

Sheltering Arms Institute Caregiver Support

At Sheltering Arms Institute, we understand that illness and injury affect not only our patients but also their caregivers. We are deeply committed to supporting caregivers through connection, education, and compassion. Our monthly Caregiver Safe Space Support Group offers a welcoming environment where caregivers can share their experiences, express their feelings, learn practical strategies, and realize that they are not alone. These meetings are held in person at our main campus in Short Pump with an option to join virtually for convenience. Additionally, our Caregiver Ambassador Program connects caregivers with ambassadors who have lived experience providing care to loved ones. These ambassadors offer one-on-one guidance, emotional support, and encouragement, helping caregivers navigate the challenges of their role with empathy and understanding.

Caregiving is a journey that requires patience, love, and self-care, but you are not alone. By connecting with supportive networks and taking advantage of available resources, caregivers can find the strength and community they need to thrive alongside their loved ones.
