INPATIENT EXPERIENCE

The power to overcome

Sheltering Arms Institute’s inpatient limb loss recovery program equips patients with the tools, strength, and mindset they need to achieve optimal outcomes and a high quality of life.

Your own space

Spacious, all-private rooms feature Stryker beds, en-suite bathrooms, grab bars, lifts, lay-flat furniture for guests, and large picture windows with views of nature to give patients with limb loss the confidence and foundation they need to recover.

Post-operative care

Sheltering Arms Institute’s patients with limb loss begin their inpatient rehabilitation shortly after surgery, receiving steadfast medical oversight, wound care, peer visitor services, prosthetist consultation, and advanced technology such as bodyweight support devices and virtual reality treadmills.

Specialized interdisciplinary teams

An expert team of physicians and nurses; physical, occupational, and recreation therapists; rehabilitation psychologists; prosthetists; and registered dietitians are ready to guide your limb loss recovery and get you back to a life you love.

Focused on goals

From residual limb care and pain management, to psychosocial and emotional well-being, the limb loss team at Sheltering Arms Institute works with patients to set and achieve concrete recovery objectives.

Intensive pre- and post-prosthetic limb training

Most patients with limb loss receive their prosthetic device 6-8 weeks after their amputation. To prepare, we recommend patients receive intensive rehab on an inpatient basis prior to the prosthetic limb’s  arrival. This sets patients up for a successful transition to use a prosthetic device.

A community of support

Patients with limb loss at Sheltering Arms Institute gain access to a network of support, comprised of adaptive recreation and well-being partners, including the Amputee Coalition, Sportable, and the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services so that their recovery can maintain momentum upon return to the community.
