Fireworks Safety Tips for a Fun July 4th

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day it is important to keep a few safety precautions in mind, particularly related to fireworks. Hands and fingers tend to be the body parts most commonly injured in fireworks accidents, which can result in surgery and/or amputation and require extensive rehabilitation.

The following safety tips will help you avoid injury:

  • Light fireworks one at a time.
  • Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over the firework when lighting.
  • Do not attempt to pick up or re-ignite a “dud” firework.
  • Use fireworks on a hard surface in a clear, open, outdoor area.
  • Keep water readily accessible.
  • When finished burning, douse fireworks with water before discarding in trash can.
  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Sparklers are another July 4 favorite, especially among children, and require some specific precautions of their own:

  • Hold/light only one sparkler at a time.
  • Remain standing, but do not run or walk while holding a sparkler.
  • Do not hold a child while using a sparkler.
  • Once a sparkler is done burning, place in a bucket of water to cool down.

Enjoy a happy and SAFE holiday!
